Background

Dr. Jorge Figueiredo assumed ministerial office on February 7, 2025, leading the Ministry of Health during the current governmental term. A qualified medical doctor with a Master's degree in Health Systems Development, he previously served as Director-General of Health and held delegated health leadership roles in Praia, Tarrafal de Santiago, and Sal.

Experience

In his early career, he practiced medicine at Praia Hospital and the health delegation in Santa Catarina, and contributed to public health training as a certified instructor. He has also served in civic leadership roles, elected as a National Deputy (1991–1994), later serving three terms as Mayor of Sal (2004–2016) and most recently served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Angola (2017–2023).

Achievements

Under his stewardship, the Instituto Nacional de Saúde Pública (INSP) has achieved sustained growth and become pivotal for public health research and responses—such as during COVID-19 and dengue outbreaks while raising the technical and investigative profile of Cabo Verde’s health system.
