Background
Dr. Hassane Adakal is a seasoned veterinarian and animal health expert serving with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). With extensive experience in transboundary animal disease control, surveillance systems, and regional health coordination, he plays a key role in strengthening animal health policies and programs across West Africa. Dr. Adakal has been instrumental in supporting Member States to harmonize veterinary strategies, enhance early warning systems, and promote One Health approaches in line with regional and continental frameworks. His contributions continue to shape ECOWAS’s efforts toward resilient livestock systems and sustainable animal health development.
Expertise
In academia, Prof Hassane Adakal holds a Ph.D., and is specialized in veterinary parasitology, peculiarly in ticks and tick-borne diseases. He works as Associate Professor at the Dan Dicko Dankoulodo University of Maradi (Niger), within the Department of Livestock Science and Technology. His work focuses mainly on the ecology of ticks, tick-borne diseases control (cowdriosis, ehrlichiosis, etc.) and resistance to acaricides. At the interface between animal, human and environmental health, Dr. Adakal is a key player in the One Health ecosystem in West Africa, both in research and in regional governance. He contributes to interdisciplinary training, participates in the structuring of regional platforms, and holds leadership positions within the ECOWAS RAHC to promote the integration of veterinary data into regional surveillance systems.
