Background
Dr. Donald Samuel Grant is an outstanding public Health professional and researcher with over sixteen years of experience in the health sector. Dr. Grant holds his medical degree (MBChB) from the College of Medicine and Allied health Sciences (COMAHS), University of Sierra Leone (USL), and a master’s in public health from Tulane University, USA. He continues to provide clinical care for Lassa fever (LF) and other viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) patients in the Kenema Government Hospital (KGH), Ministry of Health, Sierra Leone. He oversees the clinical, public health and research activities related to LF.
Experience
He has been an investigator on a wide range of international sponsored research, investigating LF. His involvement in these researches, helped in developing important clinical, laboratory, surveillance, and data collection tools that now serve as a very strong platform for the training of clinicians in VHFs. Together with a team of collaborators, he worked on the development of rapid diagnostic tests for the early detection of Ebola (ReEBOV™) and Lassa (ReLASV®) virus antigen. As a lecturer in USL, he has been promoting investigators competencies and skills building in the conduct of clinical trials and other research methodologies through Faculty Development Fellowships at regional south-south collaborating sites and also facilitate master’s and PhD training of the next generation of research leaders from KGH and COMAHS. Currently, he is the District Medical Officer (DMO) in Kenema, Ministry of Health, responsible to provide quality health services to the people of Kenema (Population=700,000+), through primary health care services in 134 health centers and two hospitals within Kenema district.
